How to Buy a Used Car Out of State

How to Buy a Used Car Out of State

When it comes to finding the perfect used car for your needs, sometimes you need to look as far as the next state over. In fact, it’s not uncommon to buy a vehicle out of state. To help you navigate the process and find the perfect used car for you, we at Route 2 Auto Sales have put together this detailed guide. Shoppers in the Warwick area should read ahead to get started!

Put Together a Budget & Wish List.

As with buying a used car in state, you’ll need to start by hammering down a budget and next-car wish list. Take a look at your expenses and determine how much you can afford to pay per month on car payments. As a general rule of thumb, it shouldn’t be more than 15-20% of your take-home income. You’ll also want to put together a wish list, including features you want and need in your next vehicle.

1. Consider All the Additional Fees.

Used Vehicle Costs and FeesWhen shopping for your next used car out of state, you may need to pay a few additional fees, depending on the state that you buy the vehicle in and which state the vehicle will ultimately be registered in. You’ll also need to pay sales tax in the jurisdiction where the car will be operated.

2. Gather Up the Necessary Paperwork.

Once you have your budget figured out and have a used car picked out, it’s time to head across state lines and take a test drive. There are several types of paperwork that you’ll need to take with you in order to buy the vehicle, including:

  • Used Car PaperworkA valid driver’s license
  • Payment for the vehicle, such as a check or money order
  • Proof of car insurance

If you plan to trade in your current vehicle, you’ll also need to take the title and vehicle registration paperwork for that vehicle.

3. Have the Vehicle Inspected Inside & Out.

Inspecting Used Vehicles

Before you officially buy the used vehicle,  you’ll want to have it thoroughly inspected to ensure that everything is as it should be. Start by taking a look at the vehicle history report. If everything checks out there, you can move on to a physical inspection of the vehicle at the dealership’s service center.

Here, they should check everything inside and out, including the engine systems, tires and wheels, interior features, safety systems, and more.
